Why Roger Williams is so Important

In 1864, a statue of Roger Williams was installed in the US Capital Hall of Fame. “…..In his left hand is a book upon which are the words,”Soul Liberty, 1636.” The life, work, and ideals of Roger Williams as portrayed in this book reveal that he had more to do with shaping the foundation principles of the American Republic than any other man. Discussion Points of Roger’s life that are worth Sharing

—–Roger learned Latin, Dutch, and how to do stenography by the time he was twelve.

—–From when he was twelve until he was eighteen, Roger was one of the stenographers for Judge Edward Coke. Coke is considered the founder of Common Law and author of the Petition of Right.

—-At 18, Coke sent him to the best schools in London (Charter House and Pembroke) where he learned Greek. Hebrew, and French.

—-In 1628, he met and went to work for Sir William and Lady Elizabeth Masham. Lady Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Francis and Joan Barrington, an aunt of Oliver Cromwell. Roger was a cousin of Oliver’s. They provide the Parliamentary support to allow Roger Williams to obtain Patents and Charters for the State of Rhode Island.

—-1631 Roger and his wife, Mary Bernard, sail to Massachusetts.

—-1631-January 1636, Roger lives in Salem, Plymouth and is banished from the colony in January 1636. Gov. Winthrop, one of his judges, warns Roger that soldiers were coming to arrest him. Roger walks south.

—Roger survives this walk by the aid and comfort given to him by the Pokanoket and the Narragansett. He was one of only two colonists who learned Algonquian.
